Soul music—that enigmatic mix of music from the African-American musical diaspora—seamlessly combines elements of the blues, gospel, jazz, and R&B. Soul music possesses an intangible quality that brings the listener into a world of heartbreak, heartache, pride, joy, social reform, social justice, political & spiritual change, and upheaval. Soul is a music that can bring you to your knees in one moment and have you marching in the streets in the next. Please join us for this special 4-part presentation of the Women of Soul, focusing on female voices who gave of themselves so deeply and expressively to tell their stories, and the stories of so many others. Women of Soul will focus on pioneers such as Ruth Brown and Erma Franklin, powerhouse voices such as Patti Labelle and Chaka Khan, trend-setters including Tina Turner, Sade, and Brenda Russell, and modern-day soul divas like Sharon Jones, Ledisi, Leela James, and Angie Stone, and many more.
